The Northern California native was educated in Ireland, and his songs strike a deep emotional chord that moves the heart while inviting the listener to raise a glass and sing along.

Kenny Blackwell and Stuart Mason

Stuart Mason and Kenny Blackwell return to Luna Red in San Luis Obispo, with a repertoire of traditional Americana and acoustic blues. The two seasoned masters of guitar and mandolin are members of Little Black Train, a popular local bluegrass-roots trio.

Mandolinist and guitarist Kenny Blackwell, who studied with the legendary Jethro Burns, has been a fixture in the West Coast bluegrass scene since 1978. He is known for his extensive studio work on various projects, as well as his collaborations with progressive fiddler Richard Greene and his membership in the Laurel Canyon Ramblers, a legendary California bluegrass outfit. His background includes collaborations with the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Rivers and Neil Diamond. His current projects include the HayDudes, his duo with Dorian Michael, Little Black Train, the Mystery Trees, and The Demos.

Stuart Mason was born in the hills of West Virginia and has been playing traditional music on stage for over 35 years. He is known for his authentic vocals, backup guitar and mandola in alternate tunings, and inability to hold his whiskey. On banjo he plays in the older clawhammer and two-finger styles. Stuart has won awards for traditional singing (Goleta Old-Time Fiddler’s Convention), mandola (Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest), and songwriting (West Coast Songwriter’s Association). Deeply rooted in Americana, Stuart’s original songs are the fruit of many years he spent immersed in traditional music. In addition to Little Black Train and Celtic combo Molly’s Revenge, he helps present a long-running weekly residency in San Luis Obispo with the Old-Time Fiddle and Banjo Show.

Luna Red is a unique dining concept created and executed by Chef Shaun Behrens. A passion for simple and clean food, local produce, and a warm ambiance helped spur the vision for Luna Red. Inspired by the European custom of respect for the locality and traditional preparation of food, the menu includes cured meats, local cheeses, and produce from regional farmers’ markets.

John Weed (fiddle) and Stuart Mason (guitar, mandola, banjo) will present a performance of traditional fiddle tunes mixed with blues, bluegrass, and mountain songs that explore the musical connections between Ireland and America, with tastes of Scotland, Canada, and more. On fiddle, guitar, mandola, and banjo they bridge the Atlantic to recreate a lost magic that resonates with the listener of today. Both are members of the well-known Celtic powerhouse Molly’s Revenge, the old-time bluegrass group Little Black Train, and the Irish trio Story Road. With Molly’s Revenge, Stuart Mason and John Weed have appeared on festival stages from Glasgow, Scotland to Shanghai, China.

An accomplished fiddler across genres, John Weed has lived in Ireland and immersed himself in the traditional styles of Clare and Donegal. The result is an old-time Irish fiddling style that compliments his forays into bluegrass, swing, and other American music. A classically trained violinist, John leverages his understanding of the instrument to coax emotion from every tune. He has returned to Ireland many times to hone his skills and collect tunes at their source.

Stuart Mason was born in the hills of West Virginia and has been playing traditional music on stage for over 35 years. He is known for his authentic vocals, driving backing on guitar and mandola in alternate tunings, and inability to hold his whiskey. Deeply rooted in Americana, Stuart’s original songs are the inevitable result of the years he spent immersed in traditional music.

Stuart Mason and Gary Arcemont play a variety of old-time country music on fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandola, and mandolin. For years they have played together as part of the Old-Time Fiddle and Banjo Show, a loose confederation of pickers and sawyers that perform weekly in San Luis Obispo. They call it old-time music but the repertoire spans Appalachian fiddle tunes, Cajun two-steps and waltzes, early bluegrass, country blues, and the occasional Irish jig or reel.

Fiddler Gary Arcemont cooks up a musical roux that originated in the South Louisiana swamps of his Cajun family and the Appalachian birthplace of his grandfather in Asheville, North Carolina. To add some extra spice, he mixes in the fiddle traditions of New Mexico, Texas and Arizona to his black iron gumbo pot. He can be found stirring the pot with a number of bands, from California to New Mexico.
